Maena praetextata Hering, 1903, Stettin. ent. Ztg., 44: 98.

Ochrotrigona triangulifera quadratifera Prout, 1928, Bull. Hill Mus. Witley, 2: 269.

Ochrotrigona triangulifera Hampson sensu Holloway, 1976: 39.

Diagnosis

See the generic description.

Taxonomic note

Owada (1998) concluded that praetextata was a species distinct from triangulifera because it lacks the knot on vein CuA in the cell of the male forewing and has the vinculum and saccus slightly more slender. The valves in the type species are more elongate, extending further beyond the junction of the tegumen with the uncus. The two species have recently (H.S. Barlow, 2007, pers. comm.) been found to be sympatric in Peninsular Malaysia.

Geographical range

Borneo, Sumatra (ssp. quadratifera), Peninsular Malaysia.

Habitat preference

In recent surveys, one has been recorded from an area of cultivation and forest fragments at 1050m near Kundasan on the southern slopes of G. Kinabalu, and one was taken at 100m in forest on G. Santubong near Kuching. Owada (1998) recorded four specimens from 1400m in the Crocker Range, north-west of Keningau in Sabah. There is an old specimen from the Kinabalu area but without altitude, collected by Waterstradt.
