Diagnosis

The forewing facies is sexually dimorphic and distinctive. The forewing is mostly purplish red with a yellow apical area. There is a white spot basally and a white spot at the centre of the dorsum. A similar yellowish white one on the costa of the female is obscured in the male by dense rufous scaling.

Geographical Range

N.E. Himalaya, Sundaland, and east to Queensland and the Solomon Is.

Habitat Preference

The species is frequent in lower montane forest and extends more weakly to upper montane forest over an altitude range of 900m to 1790m. It also occurs infrequently in various types of lowland forest.
