Hemithea melalopha Prout
Hemithea melalopha Prout, 1931, Novit. zool., 36: 154.
Hemithea insularia profecta Prout, 1933, Gross-Schmett. Erde., 12: 114, syn. n.
Diagnosis
This species resembles H. insularia and H. antigrapha in the course of the forewing postmedial but is larger with somewhat more punctate white fasciae. Examination of the male genitalia is recommended to confirm identification. The central process from the valve sacculus is slender, expanded slightly distally, serrate particularly dorsally at the apex.
Taxonomic Notes
The genitalia of melalopha and profecta are very similar, but the serration distally on the slender saccular process is dorsal in profecta, apical in melalopha. H. nigriparmata Prout (Java) and H. subflavida Warren (New Guinea, Fergusson I.) are also related.
Geographical Range
N.E. Himalaya, Peninsular Malaysia (FRIM colln), Borneo, (ssp. profecta); Luzon, Seram (slide 12549).
Habitat Preference
Both specimens seen have been from mixed dipterocarp forest in the Ulu Temburong, Brunei, at 100m and 350m.
