Garaeus apicata Moore
Garaeus apicata Moore, 1867, Proc. zool. Soc. Lond., 1867: 617.
Garaeus apicata Moore; Holloway, 1976: 77.
Diagnosis
This and the next species are very similar but apicata always measures less than 20mm from centre of thorax to forewing apex and altapicata Holloway always more. Both differ from conspicienda sp. n. in having the posterior half of the forewing postmedial more or less straight; (See Garaeus conspicienda sp.n).
Taxonomic Notes
The Sumatran G. phthinophylla Prout may be merely a pallid form of apicata.
Geographical Range
N.E. Himalaya, Burma, Sumatra, Borneo; Taiwan (ssp. violaria Prout).
Habitat Preference
The species was taken frequently over an altitude range from 1200m to 2110m on G. Kinabalu. During the Mulu survey it was frequent in upper montane forest at around 1780m, and taken once at each of 1000m and 2360m on G. Mulu; on the limestone G. Api it was taken singly at 900m and 1200m.
Biology
The brown larva has been reared by Mr Chey Vun Khen and staff, Forest Research Centre, Sepilok, from Gmelina arborea (Verbenaceae).
