Ercheia pulchrivenula Gaede stat. n.
Ercheia pulchrivena pulchrivenula Gaede (ex Strand), 1938, Gross-Schmett. Erde, 11: 478.
Ercheia pulchrivena Walker sensu auctorum, including Holloway, 1976: 30 and Kobes, 1985: 38.
Diagnosis
This is a larger, darker species than cyllaria. Females can easily be distinguished by the rufous band along the dorsum and the white marking towards the costa interior to the postmedial, but both sexes usually have the exterior central white spot of the hindwing more prominent than the interior one (reversed in cyllaria). The anterior of the forewing postmedial is more distinctly concave distad where it approaches the costa, the submarginal also is more regularly curved at its costal end and is generally conspicuously paler.
Taxonomic notes
This species has been treated erroneously as pulchrivena Walker by most authors over the past century (see next species). Nielsen et al. (1996), as mentioned on p. 37, considered that Gaede validated many Strand aberrational names in his treatment of Noctuidae in Gross-Schmett. Erde 11, and this applies also to pulchrivenula.
Geographical range
Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo.
Habitat preference
The species is generally rare but has been recorded from lowland forest in Brunei, at 1780m and 1790m on G. Mulu and at 1930m on G. Kinabalu.
Biology
Bänziger (1982) recorded the adult (as pulchrivena) piercing fruit in Thailand.
