Epiplema certaria Walker

Diagnosis

This is a small grey species of typical epiplemine shape. The forewing has a straight transverse fascia medially and a darker shade towards the tornus (showing broadly and more completely submarginally on the underside). The hindwing has two dark spots at the margin posterior to each of the tails.

Taxonomic notes

In the forewing, R5 is separate from M1, rather than stalked with it, and M2 is absent on the hindwing. The female genitalia have rather square ovipositor lobes. The ductus is long, slender, with a very short colliculum at the base. The bursa is ovate, scobinate, with a distal signum consisting of a pair of bilaterally symmetrical rows of overlapping serrate plates that get progressively larger distally.

Borneo.

Habitat preference

The original specimen was taken by A. R. Wallace in the lowlands of Sarawak. The only other specimen seen is from the understorey of regenerating selectively logged lowland forest in the vicinity of the Danum Valley Field Centre, Sabah.
