Ephemeroidea virescens Snellen
Ephemeroidea virescens Snellen, 1902 [1903]. Tijdschr. Ent., 45: 222.
Diagnosis
The wings are relatively shorter and deeper than in other species of the genus, as are the male antennae. Though still extensively transparent, the forewing have wider black borders. The branching system of the forewing radial sector is further from the margin than in ariel; it is enhanced by fine rows of black scales between the tubular veins, giving the appearance that veins are much more numerous. The distal part of the forewing cell is also more extensively blackened. The black is tinged greenish in places everywhere, and the wing bases are also bright green.
Geographical range
Java, Sumatra, Borneo.
Habitat preference
Bornean material is restricted to a few specimens with hand-written labels indicating Borneo and/or Java and collection by Mrs Walsh.
Biology.
The early stages were described and illustrated by Piepers & Snellen (1902 [1903]) and referred to also by Jordan (1907). The larva is atypical of the Zygaenidae, more like that of an arctiid, elongate and relatively slender. There is a broad dorsolateral of ochreous yellow that is edged darker laterally on each segment by four short black horizontal lines forming a quadrilateral. The verrucae bear long hairs, those in the dorsum being pale except on A4 and A5 where they are black. T1 has a white lunule dorsally and has very long black hair pencils with white tips laterally. Pupation is in a flat, oval cocoon.
The host plants recorded were bamboos (Gramineae).
