Diagnosis

This is a larger species than the previous three, with similar, if narrower, more densely fasciated pale orange markings on grey: the grey is darker, and there is a diagnostic broken white bar in the basal orange fasciae of the hindwing.

Taxonomic Notes

Watson (1961) described subspecies denotata on clear genitalic differences in both sexes, particularly: incurved valves; curved aedeagus with reduced apical process and cornuti in vesica; absence of lateral sclerotisations on the male eighth sternite; less convolute basal portion to the corpus bursae; more weakly bilobed margin to the ostium.

A Sarawak male (See Drapetodes matulata Felder) has genitalia (figured) as in typical magnifica, so it is possible that there are two closely related species in Borneo.

However, material is too limited and the records too widely separated geographically for this to be asserted with confidence.

As indicated in the generic account, there are several features of the genitalia atypical of Drapetodes.

Geographical range

Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, N. Borneo; E. Borneo (ssp. denotata).

Habitat preference

Only three Bornean specimens are known, the type material (both sexes) of denotata from Kariorang in E. Kalimantan and one specimen of the typical race from 250m in lowland forest in limestone just south of the Melinau Gorge in Sarawak.
