Image of Dichromia inconspicua Snellen ♂

Dichromia inconspicua Snellen comb. n.

Hypena inconspicua Snellen, 1880, Tijdschr. Ent., 23: 118.

Hypena nephoptera Bethune-Baker, 1908, Novit. zool., 15: 234.

Diagnosis

The forewings are black and grey with very similar pattern to thermesialis, but the postmedial is more transverse, straight to sinuous rather than triarcuate, and the pale submarginal meanders irregularly but more strongly. The hindwing is almost as dark as the forewing rather than distinctly paler.

Taxonomic note

In the male genitalia the structure is typical of Dichromia, and the valve is distinguished by a shallow, circular, scaled depression ventral to the central pleat. The record of this species from Thailand by Kononenko & Pinratana (2005) is probably a misidentification.

Geographical range

Sulawesi, Seram, New Guinea, Borneo.

Habitat preference

Bornean representation is limited to a series of six old specimens from G. Kinabalu that are lacking more precise data.
