Cypa decolor Walker

Smerinthus decolor Walker, 1856, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln. Br. Mus., 8: 255.

Cypa decolor Walker; Rothschild & Jordan, 1903: 298.

Diagnosis

Males tend to be more variegated than females. The submarginal fascia on the underside of the male forewing is irregular, with dark grey distally and yellow grading into reddish brown basally: the hindwing submarginal is also crenulate. In the female these markings are obscure in an evenly red background. The species could be confused with S. terranea but this is greener brown above; the fasciae on both wings below in both sexes are straight, that of the forewing with pale grey on both sides though there is a basal reddish brown triangular zone that takes up half the area of the wings.

Geographical range

Burma, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, Philippines, Ceram, New Guinea.

Habitat preference

The moth is perhaps more common in the lowlands but has been taken at over 2000mon G. Kinabalu.
