Crithote horridipes Walker
Crithote horridipes Walker, 1864, J. Linn. Soc. (Zool.), 7: 183.
Crithote horridipes Walker; Holloway, 1976: 34.
Diagnosis
All three species in Borneo have similar sexual dimorphism and general patterning as described above. In horridipes and the new species, the male hindlegs are longer and more densely invested with long black scales. On the male forewing they both have a rather obscure paler basal triangle with a distal edge that runs obliquely towards the costa. In pannicula Swinhoe this triangle is paler, and its distal edge continues asymptotically distad along the costa. In the females, *pannicula has the distal dark area of the forewing with a rather angular basal boundary that meets the dorsum obliquely, whereas the other two species have this boundary more evenly curved anteriorly and meeting the dorsum more or less at right angles. Inhorridipesthe distal black zone of the forewing is uniform, whereas in the new species it combines a double, paler, ripple-like mark in both sexes (see also the diagnosis below) in typical Sundanian species (Himalaya and Chinese specimens resemblehorridipesin facies).
Geographical range
Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, ?Vietnam (Zilli, 1999).
Habitat preference
The species is infrequent in lowland forest and extends more rarely to as high as 1500m.*
