Diagnosis
The red wings with their unusual arrangement of blue-black patches render this species unmistakable.
Taxonomic Notes
Races with somewhat different facies occur in the Moluccas (hyphinoe Cramer) and New Guinea to the Solomons (pallescens Roepke). The hindwings lack the red border, and the patches on the forewings are slightly larger such that some have coalesced; the red ground colour is less intense.
Geographical Range
India to New Guinea and the Solomons.
Habitat Preference
The species is mainly found in lowland rainforest, though one was taken at 1618m on Bukit Retak, Brunei.
