Chadisra basivacua Walker comb. n.

Dediama basivacua Walker, 1862, J.Linn. Soc. Lond. Zool. 6: 134.

Chadisrella javensis Kiriakoff, 1967: 59, syn. n.

Calapana basivacua Walker; Kiriakoff 1968; 214.

Chadisra bipars Walker, sensu Barlow 1982: 64.

Diagnosis

The pale basal zone of the male forewing is edged darker distally; the area within the ‘step’ of the pale zone margin at the dorsum is usually the same colour as the distal half of the wing, rarely fawn (in both sexes). In both sexes there is only a single black streak associated with the forewing subapical costal mark. The female has the exterior half of the forewing a clear, pale, greenish grey; in the genitalia the ductus bursae has a sclerotised ventral lobe and the ostium bursae is flanked by angled, posteriorly directed projections of the lamella vaginalis.

Taxonomic notes

The male genitalia illustrated for this species by Kiriakoff (1968) are those of an unrelated Sumatran male in the BMNH which appears to belong to an undescribed species that may be related to borneensis (below): it shares the deep, heavy, fused transtilla but this bears one central spine instead of a pair of spines.

The holotype of basivacua has male genitalia identical to those illustrated by Kiriakoff for Chadisrella javensis Kiriakoff. Therefore the two names are brought into synonymy and Calapana Kiriakoff must become a junior synonym of Chadisrella Kiriakoff, syn. n. Chadisra (Chadisrella) celebensis Kiriakoff from Sulawesi has similar genitalia and is probably the sister species of basivacua.

Geographical range

Sundaland, ?Philippines if calapana Semper is indeed a synonym of basivacua as set out by Kiriakoff (1968).

Habitat preference
