Diagnosis

The species bear a superficial resemblance to Lymantriidae in the genera Lymantria and Imaus. They can be distinguished by the rather oval shape to the forewing and by the double row of black dots on the blunt, often rather bulbous abdomen.

Taxonomic Note

Schintlmeister (2004a) described Cerasana anceps ssp. ursulae from S. Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia and ssp. butzi from Palawan. He also recorded the nominotypical race from Sumatra and the archipelago to the west of Sumatra. However, the type of lutea Pagenstecher, now located by A. Schintlmeister (see Note 279), has proved to be conspecific with C. anceps and therefore a senior synonym of the Palawan ssp. butzi Schintlmeister (Schintlmeister & Lourens, 2010).

Geographical range

Malaya, Sumatra, Borneo, Philippines.

Habitat preference

In the Mulu survey the species were taken infrequently in lowland forest, mainly alluvial and riverine forest. In Brunei one occurs in a variety of habitats such as dipterocarp forest in Ulu Temburong, dry kerangas at Telisai, and secondary and coastal associations at Seria.
