Camptoloma mirabilis Roepke comb. n.
Leucopardus mirabilis Roepke, 1943, Natuurhist. Maandbl 32: 50.
Leucopardus tigrinus nigrior Holloway, 1976: 5.
Diagnosis
The white wings with a series of dark grey stripes and spots, and the pale yellow forewing tornus render mirabilis unmistakable.
Taxonomic notes
The taxon nigrior is hereby placed as a subspecies of L. mirabilis, comb. n. as it shares with mirabilis, rather than tigrinus Hampson (N.E. Himalaya, Burma): a more angled hindwing postmedial set at a greater distance from the marginal row of dots; a forewing discal mark that is closer to the postmedial line rather than to the antemedial; a broader, more lenticular white band between the forewing submarginal and marginal dark bands, over the anterior half. The fasciation is more sharply defined and a darker grey (almost black) than in tigrinus. The Bornean race has the hindwing postmedial more extensive and more clearly defined. The family placement is discussed in the generic account.
Geographical range
Java, Peninsular Malaysia; Borneo.
Habitat preference
The species is montane, the two Bornean specimens being from 1000m on G. Matang, Sarawak, and 1660m on G. Kinabalu.
Biology
The Kinabalu specimen was taken flying by day.
Taxonomic Note
A specimen in RMNH, Leiden, of the typical race of Camptoloma mirabilis Roepke was taken at 1050m on G. Lumut in Kalimantan Timur, well separated from the localities for ssp. nigrior Holloway in Sabah and Sarawak. In the absence of evidence of sympatry or DNA barcode evidence to the contrary, the two taxa should probably continue to be treated as conspecific.
