Callidrepana micacea Walker

Drepana micacea Walker, 1862, J. Linn. Soc. Lond. (Zool.), 6 :176.

Drepana biocularis Moore, 1879, Descr. new lepid. Insects Colln Atkinson, p. 84, syn. n.

Ausaris fulvilauta Warren, 1897, Novit zool., 4 :12, syn. n.

Callidrepana pilana Swinhoe, 1905, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist. (7), 15 : 150, syn. n.

Diagnosis

This is a very variable species in both sexes as illustrated.

The postmedials are characteristically double, and the forewing discal spot is darker brown, ovate, either solid or a fainter outline.

The larger females could be confused with those of vanbraeckeli or pulcherrima, but the shape and emphasis of the forewing discal spot is diagnostic.

Taxonomic Notes

The synonymy above reflects the variability of the species: genitalic features of both sexes are relatively constant, however, except for material from Sulawesi where the valves of the male are narrower.

Geographical range

N.E. Himalaya, Andamans, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra (ZSM), Borneo, Philippines (slide 2087), Sulawesi (slide 2086).

Habitat preference

The species is infrequent in a variety of lowland forest types, including heath, swamp and mangrove forest, being possibly the only drepanid that is frequently encountered in mangrove.

Biology

In the Andamans (unpublished IIE records ex Prashanth & Veenakumari) the species has been reared in mangrove from Bruguiera (Rhizophoraceae).
