Hypocrita? aurantiaca Snellen, 1886, Notes Leyden Mus., 8: 4.
Byrsia aurantiaca javana Rothschild & Jordan, 1901, Novit. zool., 8: 422.
Diagnosis
See the generic description. The triangular shape of the forewing apical black and red zone is diagnostic.
Habitat Preference
Only one specimen has been taken in recent surveys, day-flying at 150m during the Mulu survey. Older material seen is from Kuching, Pontianak and Sandakan.
Biology
The larvae were described by Piepers & Snellen (1904). They are bright ochreous in ground colour, covered densely with white hairs. Over all except the head and anal portion, the body has a greenish tinge, with T3 and A7 being black dorsally and bearing several small, spiny verrucae. From T2 backwards, each segment has a transverse line of yellowish white. The larvae were stated to be found on the leaves of Mangifera (Anacardiaceae), but with no indication of what they actually fed on.
