Diagnosis

This and the next species are very similar, but onelia is slightly larger, with a richer brown tone to the more variegated forewings, where the paler areas can also have a mauve tinge in fresh material; the anterior of the thorax is distinctly ochreous. Identification is best confirmed by dissection.

Taxonomic note

Examination of the type material of oneliain UM Oxford confirms the synonymy of luteipalpis with it as in Poole (1989); umbrosa Walker, placed as a synonym of onelia in Holloway & Miller (2003: 126), is a valid species (see below). The male genitalia of a Bornean male (slide 18361) differ from those of a Sri Lankan one (slide 10913) in having the process on the right side of the tegumen narrower and flexed, foot like; the valve processes are also slightly different, for example the middle one on the right is shorter than the other two in the Bornean male, as distinct from longer.

Indian Subregion to Sundaland and the Philippines.

Habitat preference

All material seen is from the lowlands. In recent surveys singletons were taken in heath forest on sand at 15m near Telisai and in disturbed dipterocarp forest at 30-60m at Ulu Belait in Brunei, and in lowland forest of the Barito Ulu of Kalimantan Tengah.
