Benbowia virescens Kiriakoff
Stauropus virescens Moore, 1879, Proc. zool. Soc. Lond. 1879: 404.
Stauropus obscuratus van eecke, 1929, Zool. Meded. Leiden 12: 165, syn. n.
Benbowia dudgeoni Kiriakoff, 1967: 53, syn. n.
Diagnosis
See Benbowia kiriakoffi sp. n. Some specimens (e.g. from Borneo and Sumatra) have the basal area of the forewing and the costa of the hindwing broadly suffused with black (illustrated), but the male genitalia show no constant differences from those of typical virescens. The holotype ♂ of obscuratus is an extreme of this form.
Taxonomic Notes
The male genitalia illustrated by Kiriakoff (1968: 136) for virescensare those of the next species; the holotype of virescens has genitalia very similar to those of that of dudgeoni, hence the synonymy as presented.
Geographical range
N. E. Himalaya, Taiwan, Sundaland.
Habitat preference
Records have been infrequent but from a range of rain forest habitats from the lowlands to 2000 m.
Biology
Barlow (1982) described the larva as green with a dorsal purple line and similar colour on the legs.
The spiracles are white and there is a sublateral yellow line.
The body is thickened centrally and the anal segment is bifid.
