Diagnosis

Through most of its range there is marked sexual dimorphism of facies (in ssp. melli both sexes converge on the female form). The forewings are irregularly fasciated pale grey in the female and almost white in the male, with a distinctive darker zone defined postmedially on the costa, pale-centred in the female but more uniformly dark in the male. The hindwings are also darker in the female.

Taxonomic notes

There is some slight variation in the male genitalia through the range. The Bornean specimen dissected has a rather long uncus, with narrower lateral arms, and a longer and broader juxta than in males from Sri Lanka and Taiwan. The Sri Lankan male (slide 19115) had a more typical inverted ‘V’ type of juxta.

Geographical range

Sri Lanka, India, Thailand (VK), Vietnam (Zilli, 1999), Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo; China, Taiwan (ssp. melli); Sulawesi.

Habitat preference

Recent surveys have yielded only two specimens from lowland forest at 30-60m near Labi and 300m in the Ulu Temburong of Brunei, and one from 1618m on Bukit Retak. Martini & Thony (1993) recorded the species from 950m on G. Trus Madi in Sabah. There are also two specimens from Samarinda in the lowlands of Kalimantan.
