Taxonomic notes
Sundanian material (except Javan - ssp. stigmatica Rothschild) is referable to ssp. strigivenata Butler: the hindwing marginal markings are much larger than in the typical Sri Lankan and Indian race, though this is variable.
Geographical range
Sri Lanka and India to Sundaland.
Habitat preference
This is a rare species but taken both in lowland forest and in upper montane forest.
Biology
Bell (MS) reared the larva in S. India. The colour is a light chocolate brown, satiny, with a black collar on the prothorax, and other segments variably marked with black lines: dorsally at the anterior end; obliquely laterally on Al and A7; and Al0 dorsally. Younger larvae are more brightly marked. The larva is reclusive, feeding up slowly on young leaves. Pupation is in a semiovoid cocoon on the soil or rotten wood.
