Diagnosis

The species is a deeper, more purplish brown than A. atlas, with a more angular forewing postmedial that is edged distad by grey patches in the spaces and concave distad anterior to the angle. Forewing apical markings are grey rather than pale brown or yellow.

Geographical range

Sundaland.

Habitat preference

Only two specimens have been taken in Borneo, both in lowland forest in Brunei.

Taxonomic Note

Häuser et al. (1996) described and illustrated the early stages of Archaeoattacus staudingeri. The species was reared in captivity, and the natural host plant was not recorded. Nässig, Naumann & Rougerie (2010) recorded staudingeri from altitudes up to 1600m.

Biology

There is no information on the life history but it is likely to be comparable to that of A. edwardsii described in the generic account.
