Antheraea lampei Nässig & Holloway
Antheraea roylii korintjiana Bouvier, 1928, Bull. Hill Mus. Witley, 2: 122, 135.
Antheraea pernyi korintjiana Bouvier; Allen, 1981: 118.
Antheraea roylei korintjiana Bouvier; Lampe, 1985: 13.
Diagnosis
The male is uniform medium grey with faint dark submarginals that are edged thinly and brokenly with white distally.
Taxonomic Notes
- W. Nässig (pers. comm.) has suggested from a study of early stages that there are two taxa of the roylei / pernyi group in Sumatra, one of which is korintjiana. It is perhaps better therefore to refer the Bornean specimens to this taxon alone until the situation in Sumatra can be resolved.
- Nässig & Holloway (1989) discussed the identity of A. korintjiana Bouvier in relation to the discovery from rearing that two very similar species flew in Sumatra. Thus, korintjiana was found to be a subspecies of the Himalayan A. roylei Moore. The other Sumatran species, conspecific with the material referred to korintjiana in Part 3, was new, and was described as A. lampei Nässig & Holloway. In males, the forewing apex is squarer than in korintjiana, and the hindwing margin is straight rather than rounded.
Geographical range
Sumatra, Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia.
Habitat preference
The single Bornean male was taken at 1790m on Gunong Mulu, Sarawak, in upper montane forest.
The species is montane also in Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia.
Biology
Arora & Gupta (1979) recorded the following host-plants for the related roylei Moore: Betula (Betulaceae); Cyperus (Cyperaceae); Daphniphyllum (Daphniphyllaceae); Quercus (Fagaceae); Malus, Prunus, Pyrus (Rosaceae); Euodia (Rutaceae).
