*Noctua aluco *Fabricius, 1775, Syst. Ent.: 591.
*Anisoneura hypocyana *Guenée, 1852, *Hist. Nat. Insectes, Spec. gén. Lépid. *7: 162.
*Anisoneura hypocyana buruensis *Prout, 1926, Entomologist, 59: 73.
*Anisoneura aluco *Fabricius; Holloway, 1976: 31; Kobes, 1985: 78.
Diagnosis
Both Bornean *Anisoneura *species have a similar cryptic facies (see generic account) of a sequence of oblique fasciae of various widths, intensity, colour and regularity, but *aluco *is much larger, more robust, and has the apices of the wings more produced. The underside in the next species is paler, brown rather than purplish brown, and more strongly banded.
Geographical range
Himalaya, Taiwan, Burma, Thailand (VK), Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Buru.
Habitat preference
Though uncommon, aluco has been recorded from the lowlands to 2600m.
Biology
Robinson et al. (2001) recorded the species as ‘polyphagous under tree bark’, but it is clear in the source they cite that the reference is merely to the camouflage of the adult when at rest on bark.
