Mesocopsis Warren

Genus Details

Type species: posticata Walker.

The type species was associated with Eublemma by Hampson (1910: 76) prior to its placement in Mesocopsis by Warren (1913, Gross-Schmett. Erde, 11: 216). Poole (1989) retained the only species in that genus, though the BMNH curation currently has it in Eublemma.

The forewings are rather narrow and triangular compared to typical Eublemma, with the distal margin much more oblique. The hindwings have the distal margin shallowly excavate centrally (Hampson, 1910). The facies is generally a variegated dark vinous brown, darker at the margin, with irregular paler bands submarginally and medially, the submarginal ones more fawn-brown, on each side by zigzags of the darker colour. The medial bands are more irregular with white components in places, particularly centrally on the forewing at the discal point, this reproduced on the underside by a black lunule in a white surround.

The male genitalia (slide 21518) indicate no close relationship to Eublemma. The valves are very slender, sinuous, unequally bilobed apically and having a thorn-like central costal process somewhat as in Corgatha.
